Three international students were caught avoiding taxes on cigarettes by smuggling them inside stuffed toys.
The news source reported on Wednesday (Oct 30) that Singapore Customs conducted a two-day operation from Oct 22 to 23 and discovered seven parcels containing cigarettes hidden in plush toys labeled as “decorations”.
Authorities took action against the unusual smuggling method after receiving a tip-off from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority.
A 21-year-old Chinese national was apprehended at Tao Ching Road with 70 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes in four parcels, as reported by Singapore Customs.
He allegedly accepted the parcels on behalf of an overseas friend who instructed him to either deliver them or arrange for buyers in Singapore to collect them.
The man was brought to court on October 25 to face charges.
Additionally, two Chinese nationals, aged 22 and 28, were fined $3,000 and $2,500 respectively for bringing in the other three parcels.
The news source mentioned that all three individuals hold student passes.
A total of 115 packets and 19 sticks of duty-unpaid cigarettes were confiscated, resulting in the evasion of around $1,279 in duties and Goods and Services Tax.
Singapore Customs advised the public to remain alert to smuggling activities that undermine the country’s tax system and encouraged reporting any suspicious behavior through its online platform.
